I’ve been patiently waiting for Poncho Stevens to release an album that has been in the works for a good while now, but life happens and sometimes you’re forced to pump the brakes. Lucky for me, he put together a brand new band called The Electric Warriors featuring Steve Forrest on drums and Will Hastings on bass. It was their very first show ever and I was stoked to hear it would be at The Basement, one of my favorite venues. If you’re in town for a show there, arrive early because parking is VERY limited.
In a city where country, indie, folk or honky tonk genres rule the scene, it was refreshing to see a raw rock & roll band and hear their gritty sound vibrate The Basement walls. It’s the kind of music I grew up listening to.
I try real hard to avoid comparing bands to other bands, but sometimes music can transport you back to another time and place. I detected a bit of British rock influence in their sound. Think Liam Gallagher of Oasis, just to give you an idea. This may sound weird and I’m probably the only person at the show who experienced it, but there was even a moment where it felt like I was witnessing a Jane’s Addiction show. Maybe it was the atmosphere. Who knows. But that’s truly a good compliment from me. I loved every minute it.
Here’s a video I took of their full set. I’m counting down the days until the next one!!
